Reflexive Pronouns

Reflexive pronouns are used when the subject and the object of a sentence refer to the same person or thing. They are formed by adding “-self” (singular) or “-selves” (plural) to the relevant personal pronoun. Here are the reflexive pronouns in English along with examples:

  1. Myself – used when the subject and object of the verb refer to the same person (singular):
    • I hurt myself while cooking.

  2. Yourself – used when addressing one person (singular):

  3. Himself – used when referring to a male person or animal:
    • He cut himself shaving.
    • He built the bookshelf all by himself.
  4. Herself – used when referring to a female person or animal:
    • She found herself lost in the city.
    • She made the dress herself.
  5. Itself – used when referring to an inanimate object, an animal, or a concept:
    • The cat cleaned itself.
    • The machine turns off by itself.
  6. Ourselves – used when referring to ourselves (plural):
    • We congratulated ourselves on a job well done.
    • We must solve this problem ourselves.
  7. Yourselves – used when addressing more than one person:
    • Please help yourselves to some food.
    • Enjoy yourselves at the party.
  8. Themselves – used when referring to more than one person or a group of people:
    • The children dressed themselves for school.
    • They organized the event themselves.
