To send an instant message to another user, both of you have to be online at the same time. If that person is on your contact list, he’ll show up as being online in Windows Messenger; you’ll also appear on his online list.
Double-click a name in your contact list to open the Conversation window.
Enter your message in the lower part of the window.
Click the Send button (or press Enter).
Your message text appears in your Conversation window–and in the Conversation window of your recipient.
Messages sent by your recipient also appear in your Conversation window.
CAUTION
Don’t Accept Files
Don’t accept any unexpected files sent to you during instant messaging sessions. These files are likely to contain computer viruses, which can damage your computer system.
